It’s a Tuesday afternoon in Yaba. A groomer has just finished a nervous Lhasa Apso, the phone buzzes with a referral from a customer's cousin, and that is how most of the week's bookings arrive: WhatsApp, Instagram, word of mouth. Meanwhile, in Lekki, someone types "dog groomer near me" into Google, finds two results, and books the first one that picks up. The groomer in Yaba was never in that search.
Getting listed online is how you get into that search. It is mostly free, it takes an afternoon, and you do not need a website to start. This guide walks through the four places that matter for a Nigerian pet business, in the order we would do them.
Before You List Anywhere: The Master Checklist
Every platform will ask for the same handful of details, and the details need to match everywhere. Write them down once before you begin:
Your business name, spelled exactly as it appears on your signboard and receipts
One phone number that can take calls and WhatsApp messages
Your address, or the areas you cover if you offer mobile services
Opening hours, including the days you close
What you do, and which animals you work with
Ten or so clear photos of your premises, your team at work, and happy animals
Two Essential Compliance Points
Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC): If you trade under a business name, that name must be registered with the CAC. Note that the commission implemented a new fee schedule, so check the current figures directly on cac.gov.ng before proceeding.
Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN): If you run a veterinary clinic, you are operating in a strictly regulated profession. The VCN maintains the official register of veterinary surgeons under the Veterinary Surgeons Act, and its regulations dictate how you practice and advertise. Note: A digital listing is not a substitute for a professional license, and savvy pet owners will check your credentials. Step 1: Claim Your Google Business Profile
When someone searches "vet in Ikeja" on Google or opens Google Maps, the businesses that appear with a map pin, opening hours, and reviews are using Google Business Profiles. Setting up or claiming yours is completely free.
Who qualifies: You qualify if customers visit your physical storefront, or if you operate as a mobile service (mobile groomers, home-visit vets, and dog walkers). Service-area businesses get one profile set to their base with a designated coverage area (typically within a two-hour drive). Virtual offices are generally not permitted unless staffed during standard business hours.
How to add it: Head to business.google.com/add or search for your business on Google Maps. If it already exists unclaimed, click "Claim this business" followed by "Manage now".
Verification: Google requires proof of legitimacy. Verification methods include phone codes, text messages, email codes, pre-recorded short videos, live video calls, or physical postcards. Video verification typically requires showing outside signage, equipment, and staff-only zones. Postcards can take up to 14 days and expire after 30 days.
The golden rule: Your profile name must be your legal, real-world business name (matching your signboard), not keyword-stuffed titles like "Best Dog Groomer Lekki 24/7". Google actively flags and removes taglines, phone numbers, and stuffed locations from business titles.
Step 2: List on PetMap (Nigeria’s Dedicated Pet Directory)
Google captures broad local searches, but a dedicated directory captures high-intent users actively filtering by category and neighborhood. That is why we built PetMap.ng, to connect pet owners across Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and beyond with trusted local professionals.
Check existing listings: Search our directory first. Our team occasionally seeds public business data to ensure local coverage. If your business appears, click "Claim this listing" for a free manual review and ownership transfer.
Create a new listing: If you aren't listed, creating one takes about a minute. Input your business name, service type, state, Local Government Area (LGA), email, phone number, and targeted pet types. Enhance your profile by adding your map pin, opening hours, website, social handles, and up to 12 high-resolution photos.
Unlock business tools: Once claimed, PetMap for Business enables you to update real-time hours, display pricing, upload public gallery photos, view customer analytics (profile views and click-to-contact metrics), and request a trust badge.

Step 3: Set Up WhatsApp Business
In Nigeria, the initial customer touchpoint is almost always WhatsApp. Ensure the primary contact number listed on Google and PetMap is optimized for business communications.
Download the free WhatsApp Business app.
Set up your business profile with your official address, email, and website.
Build a product/service catalogue displaying clear offerings and pricing.
Configure automated greeting and away messages so after-hours inquiries (such as a 9:00 PM booking request) receive an instant, professional response.
Step 4: Upgrade to an Instagram Professional Account
Instagram is the visual heart of the Nigerian pet community, but a personal profile restricts vital growth metrics.
Switch to a professional account by navigating to Settings and privacy > Account type and tools > Switch to professional account, and select Business.
This grants access to audience insights, pinned contact action buttons (Call/WhatsApp/Email), and native ad-placement options across feeds, Reels, and stories.
Cross-link your ecosystem: Embed your PetMap and Google Business Profile links directly into your Instagram bio, and add your Instagram handle to your PetMap profile.

Maintain Consistency: The Quarterly Audit
Most directory errors stem from fragmented data; an old phone number on Google, a mismatched address on Instagram, or holiday hours omitted on PetMap. Once every three months, audit all four channels to ensure alignment across:
Your exact business name spelling
An active, responsive phone number
Synchronized addresses and opening hours
Fresh photo assets updated within the last year
Prompt, professional responses to all customer reviews (positive and negative)
What to Do This Week
You can complete this entire digital setup in a single afternoon using just your smartphone. Claim your Google Business Profile and initiate verification first, as it requires processing time. Next, claim or create your listing on PetMap. Finally, transition your communication lines to WhatsApp Business and Instagram Professional.
